It's 1.15 a.m. and we are coming down the shipping lane in Moreton Bay. We crossed the Wide Bay Bar this morning to cover the remaining 113 NM to Manly. It has been a good day with some nice fast sailing at up to 8 knots. Late afternoon, just before Mooloolaba, the breeze dropped and the current changed direction so it has been a bit slow since about 6.00 p.m.
About that time we decided to check the weather situation but nothing much had changed except that to the south near the New South Wales border there were some thunderstorm cells making their way north. They were described as very dangerous! One was predicted to cross into Moreton Bay so we slowed down even more. We had noticed the cloud build up from where we were at least 60 miles away. We monitored the situation as being close to land we had a good internet connection. Yes, one could be heading our way. It was quite unbelievable though how within about 20 minutes that both systems decayed and disappeared from the screen! What a relief that was.
Once inside the protection of Moreton Island we had very calm conditions. It is a lovely night with a moon getting close to full and lots of stars. Ships have been coming and going since we entered the shipping lanes so we have been kept busy watching out for them.
We still have about another hour before we will drop anchor at the Sandhills on Moreton Island and have some sleep before we continue on our way after sunup to Manly and our berth in MBTBC Marina.
