After just surfing into the Keppel Bay Marina we think we'll give it a rest! Thirty-four hours and 203 NM after leaving Shaw Island we arrived at our destination. Almost. We had planned to anchor out at Great Keppel Island to wait for another southerly blow to go through but the forecast changed slightly today and the winds are set to last a few days longer than originally forecast. With having to motor so much we decided we would come in here to get more fuel and have a rest! Apart from Shaw the last couple of anchorages have been uncomfortable as we waited out southerly blows so we thought we would take the easy way out this time and be tied up snug in a marina.
Yesterday, when we left the winds were light and went from SE round to NE during the night. We actually did some sailing during the night but it was not the enjoyable experience it should have been. With the spring tides we had a lot of turbulence as the waters tried to rush between groups of islands along the way. Once around Cape Townsend this morning we thought things would improve but the lumpiness took over then the wind came up. It was pretty blustery out there and coming across the shallows to the marina the waves looked fairly threatening. Nothing scares Jon though and he brought Tweed safely into the marina riding a couple of waves along the way.
The marina has been expanded since we were last here in 2005 and using the diagram we had from back then we quickly picked out our berth as it was just around the corner after the entrance. That was it - second from the end and with 25 knots not giving us much chance to notice as fenders and lines were positioned, we went into a berth too small for us which is part of the extensions. Our berth was further down the pontoon! Darn, with the wind blowing us hard onto the dock it was too difficult to try and back out and go to the correct one so here we are until the wind eases a bit. Maybe after some sleep it will not seem such a daunting task.
