The last leg of our passage from Indonesia to Gove has finally been completed! We are now anchored off the Gove Yacht Club in Inverell Bay, Gove. We left the lovely anchorage at Elizabeth Bay at midday to time our arrival here after 4:30 p.m. We will now be officially checked into Australia along with the five other boats that arrived today by Customs, Immigration and Quarantine some time after 8:00 a.m. tomorrow.
Sail down today was a beam reach with a lumpy swell and winds about 15 knots. Coming between the islands as we left Elizabeth Bay was quite smooth until the last section when we had a lot of turbulence throwing us about the place, or the couple of things that hadn't been stowed securely! Once clear of the turbulence the sailing was good but would have been better if we had not been trying to slow ourselves down to arrive later than 4:30.
The anchorage here is well protected and very flat. There is not a lot to see apart from a long bauxite loading jetty, the bauxite processing plant and what we think is part of the bauxite mine - the earth there is a brilliant shade of red. The land is very flat as is all the land we have seen so far. Scrubby vegetation with a few taller trees in behind and mangroves lining some sections of the shore. In front of us is the Gove Yacht Club - out of bounds to us until tomorrow - which we have heard is very welcoming so maybe looking forward to a Melbourne Cup lunch on Tuesday.
Position: 12 11.96 S, 136 42.173 E
